What I’ve Learned About Practise

Over the years I’ve learned a few fundamental things about practising:

  • It’s easier to practise when you’re in a routine. The longer you go without practising, the more difficult it becomes to start.
  • Recording and listening back to yourself is fundamental in developing your own style.
  • If you’re feeling stuck as a rock guitarist, you can expand your vocabulary with jazz and/or classical music.

To continue point 2, I think it helps to create your own jam tracks instead of using pre-recorded backing tracks. This is a trick I learned from Rick Beato. You start to think about how all the instruments work together, instead of just focusing on the guitar. This is great for composing. You will need some familiarity with recording software. You can take this even further by assessing your recordings and compositions back to back with other (professional) recordings.
