Singing Is Good for Your Health

Being able to sing is always a bonus – especially if you can play another instrument at the same time.

Researchers found that that singing causes positive neurotransmitters to be released in your brain and body. It’s also beneficial towards your lunges and cardiovascular system – because of the fact that singing requires you to take deep breathes and exert yourself.

Singing releases a substance called immunoglobulin (an interesting word to pronounce) in your saliva, while reducing cortisol. This provides increased protection against illness.

To get the maximum benefit, it’s important to look at the big picture and what history can teach us. Bel canto is a style of singing, which according to Wikipedia, began to wane around the year 1830. Bel canto is Italian for “beautiful singing.” Schools of thought do exist today which incorporate the traditional training methods of the 1800’s used by the super singers of the time. Be warned of charlatans that do not treat the voice as a muscle.

I recommend Gary Catona’s book “A Revolution in Singing,” which will bring you up to speed on how the ancient masters trained their voice.
