Modern Music Doesn’t Move Air

Real instruments move air.

In a rock band, the keyboard is perhaps the least susceptible to this concept. It really depends on the type of monitoring. The drum kit, especially the kick drum, is a good example of pushing air.

If you go back to earlier forms of music, the concept isn’t limited to a rock band. For example, orchestral music moves a lot of air simply because of the dynamic range and the expected size of an orchestra.

In most modern music, the only instrument moving air is the vocalist. The rest is programmed synthesizers and samples. A singer and a laptop.

I would estimate that music started to move less air around 2012. The effect should speak for itself. Something is definitely missing.
